How long is the NAPLEX exam, and how long are the law exams?

The North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) gives you 6 hours of exam time, inside an appointment of 6 hours and 45 minutes. The extra 45 minutes covers the screens before and after the exam and the nondisclosure agreement (NDA) you agree to first. The NAPLEX is a long exam to sit through, so plan your breaks and your pace before you go. The two law exams, the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) and the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE), are shorter.

  • 2Optional 10-minute NAPLEX breaks
  • 75 secondsAverage time for each law exam question
  • 96 secondsAverage time for each NAPLEX question

How long is the NAPLEX compared with the law exams?

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) gives these times in its 2026 Candidate Application Bulletin:

ExamQuestionsExam timeAppointment
NAPLEX2256 hours6 hours 45 minutes
MPJE1202.5 hours3 hours
UMPJE1202.5 hours3 hours

On the law exams, the extra 30 minutes covers the same screens and the NDA.

Breaks during the NAPLEX

You may take 2 optional 10-minute breaks, and the computer prompts you at set points in the exam. You may take other, unscheduled breaks too, but their time counts against your 6 hours.

The MPJE and UMPJE have no scheduled breaks. You may take an unscheduled break, but the clock keeps running while you do.

How much time is there for each question?

Spread evenly, 6 hours for 225 NAPLEX questions works out to 1.6 minutes, or 96 seconds, a question. The law exams give you 150 minutes for 120 questions, which is 1.25 minutes, or 75 seconds, each.

You answer in order and can’t go back to a question, so make each decision as you go rather than saving time to revisit hard ones at the end.
