NAPLEX exam results, score transfers and retakes

You get a pass or a fail, posted in your e-Profile with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), within 14 business days of the exam if your primary jurisdiction uses NABP’s online results system. That goes for the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and both law exams. A few jurisdictions send NAPLEX exam results to their candidates themselves.

  • 45 daysWait before you can retake the NAPLEX
  • 89 daysTime to buy a NAPLEX score transfer
  • 14 business daysTime for results to reach your e-Profile

When do NAPLEX exam results come out?

The 14 business days count from your exam date. For the NAPLEX, candidates for these jurisdictions get their results from the jurisdiction itself instead:

  • California
  • Guam
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Puerto Rico
  • The Virgin Islands

For the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) and the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE), that list is Guam, Illinois and Minnesota. NABP also sends your result to the board named on your application, and to any jurisdiction you’ve bought a score transfer for.

If you fail: the performance report and retake rules

With a fail, NABP sends a performance report that gives more detail on how you did across the exam’s competency areas. The retake rules depend on the exam:

RuleNAPLEXMPJEUMPJE
Wait after a fail45 days30 days30 days
Attempts in 12 months3Not listedNot listed
Attempts in all55 per jurisdiction5

Some jurisdictions set a longer wait. If you reach 3 NAPLEX attempts in 12 months, you must wait at least 12 months from the first of them before you reapply. The 5-attempt limit for the NAPLEX and the MPJE applies unless a board of pharmacy decides otherwise.

NABP doesn’t send another Authorization to Test (ATT) until the waiting period is over, so you can’t book a retake before then.

NAPLEX score transfer

A score transfer sends your NAPLEX result to other states’ boards, so you can move ahead with a license in more than one jurisdiction right after you pass. You can add it to your application, or buy it in your e-Profile up to 89 days after the exam. NABP says to buy it early, because the option may be unavailable if you wait until the last day.

The law exams work differently. The MPJE has no score transfer. If you’re seeking your first license, you can transfer a UMPJE score only once you’ve also passed the NAPLEX, and only to your primary NAPLEX jurisdiction or your NAPLEX score transfer jurisdictions. Pass the UMPJE first, and you buy its transfers within 89 days of your NAPLEX date; pass the NAPLEX first, and it’s within 89 days of the UMPJE.

NAPLEX pass rates and scores

For a picture of how other candidates do, NABP publishes yearly passing rates for each US college of pharmacy, in the Resources section of its NAPLEX results page.
