NAPLEX exam preparation: NABP’s own material

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) writes the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), so its content outline, sample items and practice exams are the place to begin your NAPLEX exam preparation. The same goes for the law exams, the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE) and the Uniform MPJE (UMPJE). A third-party course or book is that company’s own work, so check what it covers against NABP’s outline.

Where does NAPLEX exam preparation start?

With the material NABP lists on its NAPLEX test day page:

  • The NAPLEX Content Outline, which NABP calls your NAPLEX “study guide”
  • Sample items to download, which show the question formats
  • The NAPLEX email series and the Candidate Application Bulletin

The Pre-NAPLEX, NABP’s practice exam

The Pre-NAPLEX uses real, retired NAPLEX questions taken from earlier exams, and you can buy up to 2 attempts a year. NABP sets these rules for each one:

  • A 140-minute time limit
  • Bought in your NABP e-Profile, under the Practice Exams tile
  • 7 days to take it after you register and pay
  • Your score straight away, then a total scaled score report by email
  • No refunds

Practice exams and outlines for the MPJE and UMPJE

NABP’s Pre-MPJE is the official practice exam for the MPJE. Pearson VUE’s NABP page says it’s the only practice exam with valid questions from earlier versions of the MPJE. The Pre-UMPJE, launched in January 2026, has questions similar to the ones on test day, NABP says.

For MPJE exams from March 1, 2027, NABP says to review its MPJE Content Outline, which updates the MPJE Competency Statements. The UMPJE has its own content outline and sample items.

Can you download NAPLEX questions or a PDF?

NABP’s sample items are there to download. Real exam questions aren’t: NABP says the contents of the NAPLEX and the Pre-NAPLEX are its property and protected by law, including copyright. It bans selling, sharing, copying, buying or receiving them without its written permission, and it bans any use of artificial intelligence (AI) in connection with either exam.

A study path for the NAPLEX and your law exam

One way to use NABP’s material, in our suggested order:

  1. Read the NAPLEX Content Outline.
  2. Download the sample items to see the question formats.
  3. Work on your weaker topics with your school’s material, or with a course you’ve checked against the outline.
  4. Take the Pre-NAPLEX early, as NABP suggests, and again later if you buy a second attempt.
  5. Find out which law exam your board uses. For the MPJE, study the MPJE Content Outline and try the Pre-MPJE; in a state that has adopted the UMPJE, study its content outline and try the Pre-UMPJE.
  6. Plan your pacing for a long exam day.
