Free NPTE practice questions

Here are 20 free NPTE practice questions we wrote, spread across the body systems and other areas in the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) 2024 content outline. Each one is a standalone multiple-choice item with one best answer and a short rationale. The real exam has 225 questions for physical therapists (PTs) and 180 for physical therapist assistants (PTAs), some of them in scenario sets, so use this as a quick check of what you know, not a mock exam.

Question 1 of 20

A 22-year-old soccer player felt a pop in the knee while cutting to the side, and the knee swelled within a few hours. Which special test is most useful for checking the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)?

20 practice questions in the style of the exam.

How to use these 20 questions

Aim for 15 right out of 20. That’s 75%, our own target, not an FSBPT pass mark: the real NPTE gives a scaled score from 200 to 800, and 600 passes. If an answer doesn’t click, ask the tutor to explain it another way. Anything you miss comes back at the end.

The mix follows the 2024 outline. The musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems get five questions each, the heart and lungs get three, and the rest cover the other body systems, devices and modalities, and safety and research. We wrote them at PT level, but most of this content is on the PTA outline too.

Where can you find more free NPTE practice questions?

FSBPT writes the real NPTE, and its free demo exam has 30 sample questions on the real exam screens, including a scenario set for each level, and the Candidate Handbook has more samples. For a full-length timed exam, FSBPT sells its Practice Exam and Assessment Tool (PEAT). Our 20 aren’t from FSBPT, so treat them as practice on the content, not a preview of real items.
