Lost your Virginia license? Replace it with DMV

If you’ve lost your license, Virginia DMV lets you order a replacement online for $20 through your DMV account, as long as you’re eligible. DMV mails the new card, so check your address first, and allow at least 15 days. If you can’t do it online, or you want a new photo, go to a customer service center.

  • $2Replacement learner’s permit
  • 15 daysTo wait before contacting DMV

How do you replace a Virginia DMV lost license online?

  1. Open the replacement page and log in to your DMV account on the next screen. Some people aren’t eligible online and need to visit an office.
  2. Check your address. The post office won’t forward a license, and Virginia law says you must tell DMV within 30 days of moving. You can also send it to another address.
  3. Pay by credit or debit card, or from a checking account.
  4. Print your receipt and carry it until the new card arrives. Allow at least 15 days before you contact DMV.

Replacement fees

ItemFee
Driver’s, motorcycle or CDL license$20
Learner’s permit, car or motorcycle$2
Commercial learner’s permit$2

Your license number

Virginia doesn’t print your Social Security number on your license. DMV gives you a customer number instead, and that’s the number on the card. If you can’t find yours, sign in to your DMV account or call DMV. Staff can only discuss your own record.

Adding REAL ID at the same time

An online replacement reuses the photo on your current license and can’t add REAL ID. For that, start the application online and then visit a customer service center with your documents. A lost ID card has its own replacement, on the ID card page.
