New South Wales · Driver Knowledge Test

The NSW heavy vehicle knowledge test (HR and truck licences)

Before you can get an HR or other truck licence in NSW, you pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test. It's 45 questions on a computer at a service centre. Transport for NSW doesn't publish its pass mark, but it does publish the full question lists as free PDFs to practise with.

Which version you sit

  • Heavy vehicle rigid: for LR, MR and HR licences.
  • Heavy vehicle combination: for HC and MC licences.
  • You only sit the version for the class you're applying for. Passing it lets you apply for a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment or a heavy vehicle driving test.

Booking and taking it

Book online through MyRTA or at a service centre, and pay the test fee each time, including re-sits. Bring a completed licence application form, proof of identity and your glasses if you wear them.

The test is in English, Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese, with an audio version in several languages. A free interpreter is available through Service NSW on 13 77 88, and staff can read the questions to you.

Practice questions and handbooks

Transport for NSW suggests the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, the Road User Handbook and the national Load Restraint Guide. The practice questions on our DKT page are for cars, so use the heavy vehicle lists above for this test.
