What's published, and what isn't
- Question count and pass mark for the car DKT: not published, online or in person.
- Official practice tests: 45 questions for driver and rider tests, with a pass or fail result at the end.
- Answer format: the official car question list gives three options for every question.
- Time: the online final test has no time limit, but you must finish it in one session.
The three parts of the question list
The car question list on nsw.gov.au is split into three sections: General Knowledge, Road Safety and Traffic Signs. General knowledge covers things like licence rules and basic driving. Road safety is the biggest section, with speed, alcohol, giving way, lanes and sharing the road. Traffic signs asks what signs mean, using pictures.
If you're sitting the test in person, this list is worth working through. Service NSW recommends it alongside the handbook and the practice test.
About the 45-question, 12 and 29 rule
You'll see sites say the DKT has 45 questions and that you need 12 of 15 general knowledge and 29 of 30 road safety questions right. Transport for NSW does publish exactly that rule, but for the Rider Knowledge Test, the motorcycle version. It also says that test stops early after 4 wrong general knowledge answers or 2 wrong road safety answers.
Its car DKT pages don't give those numbers. So treat road safety as the part where you can't afford slips, and practise until you rarely miss one.
When you finish the online test
Your result shows on screen, and it's also emailed to you and saved in your MyServiceNSW Account. Service NSW says the results show the correct answer for every question, so if you fail you can see which areas to revise before you try again 12 hours later.
