Getting a motorcycle licence in NSW

To ride in NSW you pass the Rider Knowledge Test, not the car DKT, and you can get a learner rider licence from 16 years and 9 months. You don't need a car licence first. If you live in an area with rider training, you do a pre-learner course before the knowledge test.

The steps to your learner rider licence

  1. Do the pre-learner course if you live in a serviced area. You must be at least 16 years and 6 months. For a motorcycle or scooter it's 7 hours, 3.5 hours a day over 2 days, and the certificate lasts 3 months.
  2. Pass the Rider Knowledge Test at a service centre.
  3. Apply for your learner licence with a completed application form, proof of identity, your pre-learner certificate if you have one, and the fee. You also pass an eyesight test.
  4. Get your L plate and a temporary paper licence. The card usually arrives within 10 working days.

The Rider Knowledge Test

Book online, on 13 22 13 or at a service centre. Transport for NSW has a free rider practice test online and in its app, with 45 questions like the real one, and publishes the full rider question list as a PDF.

  • 45 questions on a computer, picked at random from a bank of several hundred.
  • 15 general knowledge questions, with at least 12 right to pass.
  • 30 road safety questions, with at least 29 right to pass.
  • The test stops early after 4 wrong general knowledge answers or 2 wrong road safety answers.
  • No time limit, and no waiting period to retake, but you pay each time.
  • Offered in 10 languages, with a free interpreter and an audio version. Call 13 22 13 to arrange either.

Rules for learner riders

  • Only motorcycles or scooters approved for novice riders.
  • An approved helmet, hi-vis vest or jacket, and protective gloves.
  • Zero alcohol and a maximum of 90 km/h.
  • An L plate on the back of the bike.
  • No pillion passengers, no towing and no lane filtering.
  • No phone use while moving or stopped in traffic, including hands-free.
  • No riding in Parramatta Park, Centennial Park or Moore Park.

How long it lasts

A learner rider licence is valid for 12 months. If you're not ready for your Ps by then, you reapply, do the training again and may need to resit the knowledge test. As of October 2026, rider licence fees are the same as driver licence fees, and the riding test and the Motorcycle Operator Skills Test are $72 each.
