Getting your NSW driver licence: L, P1, P2 and full

A full NSW car licence takes at least 4 years if you're under 25, or 3 years if you're 25 or over. You go through three licences, learner, red P1 and green P2, and pass three tests on the way: the DKT, the Hazard Perception Test and the driving test. There's a fee for each licence and each test.

The steps

  1. Pass the DKT, online from 15 years and 11 months or in person from 16.
  2. Get your learner licence at 16. Under 25, hold it for at least 12 months and log 120 hours, including 20 at night.
  3. Pass the Hazard Perception Test. Under 25, you can sit it after 10 months on your Ls.
  4. Pass the driving test, from age 17, within 15 months of passing the HPT.
  5. Hold your P1 (red P) licence for at least 12 months.
  6. Hold your P2 (green P) licence for at least 24 months.
  7. Move to a full licence.

P1 rules (red Ps)

  • Maximum speed 90 km/h, zero alcohol, and no phone use at all while driving, including hands-free.
  • Under 25: no more than one passenger under 21 between 11pm and 5am.
  • Only cars, and you drive solo only in the type of car you tested in. No high-performance vehicles.
  • Trailers up to 250 kg unloaded, with red Ps on the back of the trailer.
  • 4 demerit points within 3 years means suspension. Any speeding offence brings a suspension of at least 3 months.
  • Valid for 18 months. Fee $74 as of October 2026.

P2 rules (green Ps)

  • Maximum speed 100 km/h, zero alcohol and no phone use while driving.
  • No high-performance vehicles and no supervising a learner.
  • 7 or more demerit points means suspension, and any speeding offence carries at least 4 points.
  • Each suspension adds 6 months to your time on P2, on top of the suspension itself.
  • Valid for 36 months. You can apply online or in person. Fee $115 as of October 2026.

Your full licence

After 24 months on your P2, without a suspension for unsafe driving, you can apply for a full licence. You prove your identity, pass an eyesight test and pay the fee at a service centre. As of October 2026, it's $74 for 1 year, $172 for 3, $234 for 5, or $434 for 10 years if you're 21 to 44.

Moving to NSW with a licence

If you have an interstate or overseas licence, you can use it for up to 3 months after you move. After that you need a NSW licence. You might need to sit the driving test, and you can do that without holding a learner licence first. Service NSW has separate pages for transferring interstate, probationary interstate and overseas licences.
