Driving age in Alberta

The driving age in Alberta is 14: that’s when you can get a Class 7 learner’s licence. At 16, after at least a year as a learner, you can take the road test for a Class 5-GDL probationary licence. A full Class 5 comes at 18 at the earliest. If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian has to give consent.

What is the driving age in Alberta for each licence?

LicenceMinimum ageWhat else you need
Class 7 learner’s14Pass the knowledge test and a vision test
Class 5-GDL probationary16Hold your Class 7 for at least 12 months, then pass the road test
Full Class 518At least 2 years as a probationary driver, with no suspensions or demerits in the last 12 months

That makes three years at the very least from your first learner’s licence to a full Class 5. An approved driver training course can cut the probationary stage by up to six months.

Parental consent if you’re under 18

A parent or legal guardian has to come with you to the registry office, show proof of guardianship and sign a consent form. They can withdraw their consent in writing until you turn 18, and if they do, your licence is suspended.

You don’t need a parent’s signature if you can prove you’re married or self-supporting.

What a 14-year-old learner can and can’t do

A Class 7 also lets you ride a moped. To learn on a motorcycle you must be at least 16.

  • Drive a car only with a fully licensed (non-GDL) driver aged 18 or older in the seat next to you
  • No driving from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Zero alcohol and drugs
  • No more passengers than seat belts
  • Suspended at 8 or more demerit points

New drivers of any age

The GDL program isn’t only for teenagers. Every new driver in Alberta starts with a Class 7, whatever their age. An adult still has to hold it for a year before the road test, though the parental consent rule only applies under 18.
