How to pass the Alberta Class 7 test: where to study

If you want more practice, the apps and websites below are the ones Alberta learners use most. We checked each one’s price, what’s free and its ratings in October 2026.

How do you pass the Alberta Class 7 test?

  1. Read chapters 1, 2, 4 and 6 to 9 of the Driver’s Guide first. Write down the numbers as you go: zone speeds and times, following distance and the demerit limit for new drivers.
  2. Learn the signs by shape and colour first, then by symbol. That gets you most sign questions even when you don’t know the exact sign.
  3. Take a practice test and read the explanation for every question you miss, not just the right answer.
  4. Go back to the chapters behind your mistakes, then test yourself again.
  5. Head to the registry agent when you’re getting 17 or more of our 20 right without guessing.

How to choose, if you only want one or two

Start with the Driver’s Guide, whatever else you use. It’s free, every question comes from it, and no app replaces it. Apps and websites are for checking what you’ve learned, not for learning the rules from scratch.

Then pick by how you study. If you have a phone and ten spare minutes on the bus, an app with mock tests fits. If you’d rather sit down for a full 30-question run, a website on a laptop is easier. If reading the guide puts you to sleep, a YouTube walk-through of the signs can get you through the hardest chapter.

You rarely need to pay for more than one. The paid apps all work from the same guide, and a weekly subscription you forget to cancel can soon cost more than the test itself.

What each option is best for

  • The Driver’s Guide: learning the rules properly, and settling any answer you’re not sure about
  • Alberta.ca’s knowledge test page: the rules for test day, like the languages, the audio test and the one-a-day limit
  • Our free practice test: a quick check against the real 83% bar, with the reason behind every answer
  • Paid apps: lots of extra questions and full mock tests, if you want to drill for a week or two
  • Tests.ca and similar sites: full-length practice on a bigger screen
  • YouTube: going over signs if you learn better by watching and listening
  • A driving school: the road test and the driving that comes after, more than the knowledge test

Driving lessons in Alberta

Looking for lessons rather than licence classes? If you mean the licence classes themselves, Class 1 to Class 7 and what each lets you drive, our licence classes page sets them out. If you mean lessons, read on.

You don’t need lessons to pass the Class 7 knowledge test. A driving school matters more once you have your learner’s licence and start getting ready for the road test. Every driver training school in Alberta has to be licensed by the province, and alberta.ca keeps the list.

A Class 5 course for learners is at least 15 hours in a classroom and 10 hours in the car. When you finish, the school gives you a Notice of Driver Education Course Completion, which can get you a discount on car insurance. A licensed course can also cut your time as a probationary Class 5-GDL driver by up to six months.

Before you sign up, ask for the school’s rates, hours and refund policy in writing, and check that its instructors are licensed too. If you want to learn on a manual, ask whether they have one.
