Alberta driver’s handbook: the free Driver’s Guide PDF

The Alberta driving handbook is a free PDF called the Driver’s Guide: Cars and Light Trucks. The current edition came out in spring 2026, and every knowledge test question is taken from it. There’s no official PDF of real test questions and answers, so be wary of sites that claim to have one.

Where can you download the Alberta driving handbook PDF?

It’s free to download on open.alberta.ca, linked below. The 2026 edition was published in May 2026 and updated on June 15, 2026, so if you have an older copy, like the 2023 one, switch to the new one.

Community groups have translated the guide into other languages. Alberta says those aren’t government publications and it isn’t responsible for their accuracy.

Which chapters to study

Start with these chapters:

  • Chapter 1, Licensing Information: the GDL program, Class 7 rules and the knowledge test
  • Chapter 2, Traffic Control: signals, sign shapes and colours, school and playground zones, pavement markings
  • Chapter 4, Intersections and Turns: right-of-way, four-way stops and roundabouts
  • Chapters 6 to 8: emergencies, night driving, school buses, railway crossings and sharing the road
  • Chapter 9, Driving within the Law: impaired driving, demerit points and suspensions
  • Chapter 10, towing a trailer, matters less for a first-time car driver, but the test can draw on any part of the guide.

Numbers worth memorizing

  • 30 km/h in school and playground zones, unless another speed is posted
  • School zones: 8:00-9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3:00-4:30 p.m. on school days
  • Playground zones: every day, 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset
  • 60 km/h, or the posted limit if lower, when passing stopped emergency vehicles or tow trucks with lights flashing
  • Two seconds’ following distance, at least
  • 8 demerit points suspends a GDL driver
