Air brakes practice test

This air brakes practice test has 20 free questions, written from Ontario’s Official Air Brake Handbook. They cover the ground every province’s manual covers: braking, the air supply, service, spring and trailer brakes, adjustment and the daily check. Figures can differ between manuals, so questions with a number name Ontario. We use 16 of 20 as the bar, the same as Nova Scotia’s. Pick an answer to see why it’s right.

Question 1 of 20

Ontario’s Official Air Brake Handbook says every air brake system has a short delay, brake lag. Up to how long is it?

20 practice questions in the style of the air brake test.

How close is this air brakes practice test to your province’s?

Every province covered here gives a multiple-choice knowledge test based on its own manual. Alberta’s has 30 questions and you need 25 right; Nova Scotia’s has 20 and you need 16. The manuals cover the same ground, so this air brakes practice test is a fair check wherever you test, but go by your own manual where its figures differ.

The questions are ours, not any province’s. Everywhere covered here except Nova Scotia also checks the daily air brake inspection on a real vehicle, which no quiz can stand in for.

What to study after these 20 questions

For anything you missed on this air brakes practice test, go back to your province’s manual. Nova Scotia’s and New Brunswick’s manuals end each section with questions, and ICBC’s Driving Commercial Vehicles has review questions at the end of most chapters.
