How long does the Casper test take?

About 65-85 minutes, including two optional breaks, is how long Acuity Insights expects the Casper test to take in the 2026-2027 cycle. Every answer has a fixed time limit, so the parts you control are the optional breaks and the up to 30 seconds you can take to think before each scenario.

The Casper test, section by section

PartWhat happensTime
Video section4 scenarios, 2 questions each, shown one at a time. You record a spoken answer to each1 minute per answer
Optional breakAfter the video section10 minutes
Typed, part 14 scenarios, with both questions on one page3.5 minutes per pair of answers
Optional breakAfter the first 4 typed scenarios5 minutes
Typed, part 23 more scenarios3.5 minutes per pair of answers

By our own sum, the answering time alone is 32.5 minutes: 8 spoken minutes plus 7 typed pairs at 3.5 minutes. The rest of Acuity’s 65-85 minutes is watching or reading each scenario, thinking time and the breaks.

What happens in each scenario

A video scenario tells you your role, such as a friend or coworker, then plays a short video. You get an optional 30 seconds to think, then a 10-second countdown before recording starts. A word-based scenario shows a written question, statement or situation, with the same optional 30 seconds to think.

Each scenario has a set answer method, video or typed, and you can’t switch.

How long should Casper answers be?

Acuity doesn’t set a length. The timer is the only limit, and raters judge the reasoning and quality of what you say, not length alone. When time is short, Acuity suggests getting your key ideas down first, then adding detail. If you run out of time mid-thought, raters still look at your overall point.

Time to set aside around the test

Around the test itself, allow for the System Check (within 6 hours before), logging in 30 minutes early and a short optional survey at the end.

When the timing is different

Approved accommodations, such as extra time, change your timing, and your approval letter links to a practice test with your timing. Australian teacher education programs use a shorter version: 8 scenarios in about 45-65 minutes, with one optional break.
