CFP continuing education requirements

You need 25 hours of continuing education every calendar year to keep the CFP designation. Under FP Canada’s CFP continuing education requirements, at least 12 of those hours have to be in financial planning and at least 2 in professional responsibility. QAFP professionals need 12 hours, with at least 7 in financial planning and 1 in professional responsibility. You confirm your CE when you renew: by March 31 for CFP, July 31 for QAFP.

The CE year runs January 1 to December 31. Professional responsibility credits don’t carry over to the next year, but extra ones can count toward financial planning. Financial planning and professional responsibility CE must be accredited by FP Canada, and professional responsibility CE must be pre-accredited.

Reporting CE and audits

You don’t send proof at renewal. FP Canada Institute courses show up in your CE Tracker on their own, and you enter courses from other providers yourself. Keep proof of completion for three years: if you’re audited, you have to show it for the year under review.

CE right after you pass

New CFP professionals who finished the CFP Professional Education Program, or both the QAFP program and the QAFP to CFP program, are exempt from CE in the year they pass the CFP exam and the two calendar years after it. FP Canada’s CFP Certification Policies set this out.
