CFP pass rate, passing score and exam results

In May 2026, 653 people wrote the CFP exam and 77% of first-time writers passed, FP Canada said on July 21, 2026. FP Canada publishes one CFP pass rate per exam after each sitting, for first-time writers only. Your own result is pass or fail against a passing standard of 500, and it arrives by email with a letter in your FP Canada dashboard.

What is the CFP pass rate?

May 2026CFP65377%

October 2025CFP47571%
October 2025QAFP4577%

From FP Canada’s results releases of July 21, 2026 and December 17, 2025. Each release gives one rate per exam, not one per school. FP Canada sends its aggregate pass rate to education providers and planning firms that had more than 10 candidates.

What is the passing score for the CFP exam?

A score of 500, on both the CFP exam and the QAFP exam. It isn’t a percentage, and you aren’t ranked against other candidates. A committee of CFP professionals sets the standard, and the pass mark for each sitting is adjusted statistically, so a slightly harder or easier exam doesn’t help or hurt you.

Multiple-choice answers are scored by computer. On the CFP exam, most written answers are marked by two scorers, with a third deciding when they disagree. Every score between 490 and 505 is checked again before results go out.

When CFP exam results come out

FP Canada posts the release date on its exam dates page about two weeks before results come out. You get an email when your result letter is ready in your dashboard. Results aren’t given by phone, fax or email. Under the CFP Certification Policies, FP Canada tells you your result within three months of the exam date, unless there’s a misconduct investigation.

As of October 2026, the release dates for the October 2026 CFP and QAFP exams were still marked to be announced.

Asking for a re-score

Email info@fpcanada.ca within 30 days of the release date, with payment. A manual re-score costs $350 for the CFP exam and $100 for the QAFP exam, and FP Canada refunds it if your result changes from fail to pass. You get a letter within about 30 days that only says whether the result changed. FP Canada says a change is highly unlikely, since scores near 500 were already checked.

If you don’t pass: attempts and time limits

  • As of June 1, 2026, you get up to four attempts within four years of finishing the Professional Education Program.
  • After that, you repeat the Professional Education Program to qualify again. You can requalify once, for a lifetime maximum of eight attempts.
  • To write again, you send a new exam application and pay the fee again.
  • If you don’t pass the CFP exam, you can switch to the QAFP exam, as long as you meet its own education rules and attempt limits.

Once you pass, you have four years to apply for certification, or you start the path again.
