Which Nova Scotia driving tests can you take online?
Only some knowledge tests: for the Learner’s Licence (Class 7), the Motorcycle Learner Licence, the Farm Tractor Licence (Class 8) and the air brake endorsement. The knowledge test for any other licence class is in person.
Road tests aren’t online. You book one online, but you take it in a vehicle you bring to a testing location.
What you need at home
Before you start, have these ready:
- An email address, where your result is sent
- A desktop or laptop computer. You can’t use a phone or tablet
- A webcam connected to the computer. It takes photos of you throughout the test
- A credit card or debit card that works as one: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard
Make sure you can work alone. The test is taken on your own, with no help from others and no resource materials.
How the online test works
- Fill in the Application Information Form online and pay the fee.
- Look for the payment confirmation email, and keep a copy.
- Start the test right away, or come back later and sign in with the access code from that email.
- Try the sample test first if you want to see how the online testing works.
- Answer both parts. You should get your result right away, or in about a week if your test is flagged for review.
After you pass online
Go to an RMV or Access Nova Scotia location to finish. There you pass a vision test, show your ID, give written consent from a parent or guardian if you’re 16 or 17, pay the Learner’s Licence fee and have your photo taken. You can’t drive until that’s done, and you don’t need to do any of it before the online test.
Taking it in person instead
If you can’t test online, take it at an RMV or Access Nova Scotia location. The order changes: the vision test, ID and consent come first, and you can’t sit the test until they’re done. Book an appointment through Access Nova Scotia, or walk in and allow extra time.
