Nova Scotia road test: how to book it and what to bring

You book a road test in Nova Scotia online, at any Access Nova Scotia location that does driver examination and testing. As a learner, you can take it once you’ve held your licence for 12 months, or 9 months after a recognized driver education course if your instructor says you’re ready. Passing moves you from the Learner’s Licence (Class 7) to a Newly Licensed Driver’s Licence (Class 5N).

  • 12Months as a learner before the road test
  • 30Minutes for a Class 5 road test
  • $52.54Road test fee, with tax included

What do you need to book a road test in Nova Scotia?

  1. Check your Learner’s Licence. It lasts 2 years, and you have to take the road test before it expires.
  2. Pay any outstanding fines or reinstatement fees. Unpaid, they stop you getting your licence after the test.
  3. Pay the fee. Online, you pay by credit card as you book. In person, pay at Access Nova Scotia or the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and you get a road test receipt number.
  4. Book online and pick a location. If you paid ahead, enter your receipt number when asked.
  5. Need to change it? Use the RMV’s reschedule page.

What to bring on the day

Vehicles aren’t provided, so bring the car you’ll test in, plus:

  • Your valid licence, which as a learner is your Learner’s Licence
  • Proof of motor vehicle liability insurance for the car
  • A valid vehicle permit or temporary permit
  • Proof of a valid motor vehicle inspection
  • A certificate from a recognized driver training school, if you took a course
  • Your road test receipt, printed or on your phone

The examiner does a safety check of the car before the test, even if it has a valid inspection. The test can’t go ahead unless the car is in good mechanical condition.

What the examiner looks at

Before you drive, you’ll be asked to show the signal lights, horn, brake lights, headlights, wipers and hand signals. On the road, the handbook says the examiner watches:

  • How well you control the car when starting, stopping, turning and parking
  • Your observation: shoulder checks, mirrors and where you look
  • How you respond to traffic, pavement markings, signs and hazards
  • How you manage the space around the car, and how closely you follow and stop
  • Safe lane changes, signals and eye contact with other road users
  • Your decisions, like when to yield, and your speed

At the end, the examiner gives you a report of your skills and tells you whether you passed. The RMV’s road test pages don’t give a points score you need to pass.

If you don’t pass, or need a different booking

After an incomplete or unsuccessful road test, you can book another one from the following day, and you pay the fee again. A test can also be cancelled if roads or weather are hazardous at the time.

For medical, cultural or religious needs, the RMV asks you to book by phone and says it will make adjustments as the law allows. Phone booking is also how you book a licence class the online system doesn’t offer. The numbers are:
