The PEI driving test for a Class 5 licence

Highway Safety in Prince Edward Island (PEI) calls the road test a driving exam: a behind-the-wheel test with an examiner. You take the PEI driving test at the end of Stage 1. Passing it gets you a Class 5 licence and moves you to Stage 2.

  • $20Road test fee for a car or motorcycle
  • 14 daysLeast wait before you can retake it
  • 5 hoursNovice Driver Course, if no driver ed

When can you take the PEI driving test?

Once you’ve held your Instruction Permit for 365 days. In a certified driver education program, the wait is shorter and your instructor gives the test; the driving schools page explains both. Without driver ed, you also need to finish the Novice Driver Course first.

When you’re ready, contact Access PEI to arrange an appointment. Several Access PEI locations schedule driving exams, and the Highway Safety page lists them.

What to bring

Arrive with:

  • A driver who has held a valid licence for at least four years
  • A vehicle that meets all safety requirements and is fully inspected
  • Valid registration and insurance slips for it
  • Your valid Instruction Driver’s Permit
  • Proof that you finished the Novice Driver Course

The handbook (Spring 2011) says the examiner checks the vehicle’s plates, lights, horn, rear-view mirror, seat belts, wipers, muffler, brakes, tires, windshield, window glass, inspection sticker and speedometer before you start, and that no test is given in a vehicle that’s unsafe or doesn’t meet the equipment rules.

What the examiner checks

The handbook says the examiner rides with you and tells you what to do but won’t coach you, and that no one else may ride along. Ask any questions before you start. It lists what you’re checked on:

  • Starting and stopping
  • Turning and parking
  • Traffic signs and signals
  • Controlled, partly controlled and uncontrolled intersections
  • Anticipating hazards
  • Your attitude toward others

It adds that afterwards, the examiner goes over your driving and suggests ways to improve it.

Road test fees and retests
