PEI driving schools and driver ed

Highway Safety licenses the schools that teach driver education in Prince Edward Island (PEI). You don’t need driver education to get your licence, but driver ed at one of these PEI driving schools changes the route: you write the permit test in class, and you can take your road test sooner.

Which PEI driving schools are licensed?

Table A on Highway Safety’s list names the schools authorized to deliver the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program:

  • Abey Driver Training
  • Armadon Driving School
  • Driving Education of P.E.I.
  • Freebird Driving School
  • Laurentian Driving School
  • McGuire’s Safe Driving Academy
  • Queen’s Driving School
  • Ready 2 Drive Driving School
  • Ryan’s Driving School
  • Safe Drivers P.E.I.

Each is licensed as a private training school, and its permit and instructor licences come under the Highway Traffic Act’s Driving Schools Regulations. Some are also certified for other courses, such as the Licensed Driver Education Course and the Defensive Drivers Course.

Table B lists the commercial programs, such as Class 1A tractor trailer and Class 3A straight truck courses, at ASTA Safety Consulting and Training, Transport Training Centres of Canada (JVI Charlottetown Campus) and Trans Canada College.

What driver’s ed in PEI changes

In a certified driver education program:

  • You write the Instruction Permit test in class, and go to Access PEI for the vision test
  • You can take the road test after 275 days in Stage 1, instead of 365
  • Your instructor gives the road test and certifies you for a Class 5 licence
  • You don’t need the Novice Driver Course

When you pass, you go to Access PEI for your photo licence.

The Novice Driver Course, if you skip driver ed

Without driver education, you need the Novice Driver Course before you can take the road test. It covers the same material as the classroom part of a driver education program. The permit page says it’s usually taught in two sessions, and you register ahead with Highway Safety at Access PEI. The handbook (Spring 2011) lists what it explains:

  • The Graduated Driver Licensing program
  • The demerit point system
  • Impaired driving under the Criminal Code
  • Alcohol and drug education
  • How to handle certain driving conditions

The handbook also says to bring your Instruction Permit to the first class.

A study plan for the Class 7 test

Driver training starts with the handbook, school or no school. Work through it in this order:

  1. Read chapter 1 for the tests and the Stage 1 rules you’ll drive under once you pass.
  2. Give chapter 3 extra time, because the signs have a test of their own.
  3. Read chapters 2 and 4 for right of way, speed, following distance, turns, parking and impaired driving.
  4. Test yourself, then go back to the sections behind the questions you got wrong.
