RIBO exam booking with IBAO or the Insurance Institute

You can’t book through the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). RIBO exam booking is done with one of its two approved providers, the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) or the Insurance Institute of Canada (IIC), and each one runs its own dates, seats and locations. You register, schedule and pay with the provider you pick. The exam and the fee are the same at both.

  • In personEvery exam from January 1, 2027

How do you book a RIBO exam?

  1. Make sure it’s the right exam. New to insurance means Level 1; licensed agents and brokers from elsewhere may need an equivalency exam instead.
  2. Choose a provider and look at its schedule.
  3. Register with your legal name. The name and date of birth must match your government photo ID exactly, or you’ll have to reschedule at your own expense.
  4. Pay the provider, and send any accommodation request before you book.
  5. Save the confirmation. Cancelling, rescheduling and refunds are all handled by your provider.

IBAO’s details come from its notice of October 8, 2026. The Institute’s schedule lists January to June 2027 and shows some exceptions to its usual pattern: Sudbury on Tuesdays, once a month; Sault Ste Marie on Thursdays; and London once a month. Its Toronto centre is at 150 York Street, Suite 600, and RIBO’s pages sometimes call it the Insurance Institute of Ontario.

What is IBAO’s role in the RIBO exam?

IBAO delivers the exam; RIBO regulates the profession. They’re separate bodies. An IBAO RIBO exam is RIBO’s exam, written to RIBO’s standards, with IBAO running the session and issuing your result.

RIBO is the regulator set up under Ontario law. It decides who gets a licence and handles complaints and discipline. IBAO is a not-for-profit association that advocates for brokers, runs events and sells education, including a Level 1 course, and that course fee is separate from the exam fee. So your questions about seats, your score report or a reschedule go to the provider, and questions about your licence go to RIBO.

RIBO exams go in person on January 1, 2027

Online exams aren’t available after December 31, 2026. RIBO says virtual schedules are closed for 2027 and onward, and that it’s returning to in-person exams so technical problems can be fixed on the spot, with dedicated computers and staff. You’ll write on the provider’s computer, with a proctor in the room.

RIBO also says no international exams will be available in any circumstances. If you’re in another province, the Institute’s sessions are the ones to look at. RIBO said it would publish updated exam rules in December 2026, to apply from January 2027, so read those before you book.

When are the RIBO exam dates?

RIBO doesn’t publish a schedule; each provider does. IBAO said in October 2026 that registration for its 2027 dates would open by December 2026. Its registration is first-come, first-served and closes 10 days before the exam date or once spaces are full. The Insurance Institute posts a 2027 exam schedule and said candidates could register from December 1, 2026.

Asking for an exam accommodation

Send your request and documents to the provider before you book. It has to be tied to a need under protected grounds; RIBO says distance from a test centre doesn’t count.

Leave plenty of time, because the deadlines don’t agree. IBAO’s October 2026 notice says at least 15 business days before your exam period, its accommodations page says three weeks before the exam date, and RIBO’s FAQ says ten business days. Go by the earliest, or ask your provider.
