RIBO licence courses, practice questions and study kits

You don’t have to take a RIBO licence course. The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) doesn’t run one and doesn’t accredit anyone else’s, and it sets out a self-study route with its own documents. If you’d like teaching, the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO), the Insurance Institute of Canada and private companies all sell courses for the Level 1 exam, and those prices are theirs.

RIBO’s own practice exam questions

RIBO’s closest thing to a practice exam is a PDF of 79 sample questions. They’re retired questions from past exams, and each comes with review information you wouldn’t get on the real thing. RIBO doesn’t list a price for it.

Don’t read your score as a forecast. RIBO says your performance on these questions won’t predict your result, and the set isn’t balanced to the blueprint. It can also help with the two equivalency exams, as each one covers a domain that’s also on Level 1.

What to read if you’re studying alone

RIBO calls its list high level and not exhaustive, and it points you to the Supporting Knowledge column of the blueprint for the detail. These are the documents it names:

  • The Level 1 Competency Profile and Blueprint
  • The Registered Insurance Brokers Act and Ontario Regulations 989, 990 and 991
  • RIBO By-Laws No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3
  • The Ontario Automobile Policy, known as OAP 1

RIBO’s Consolidated Examinee Resource puts all of those except the blueprint into one PDF. Read RIBO’s auto reform page alongside it, because RIBO says the accident benefit changes of July 1, 2026 are on the exams.

How to choose a RIBO licence course

Start with what you already know, because the courses split by background. IBAO, for one, sends people with limited industry experience to its Broker Launchpad, licensed people to its Equivalency Prep and people who’ve already tried the exam to its Exam Clinic.

Then check three things on the seller’s page: how long your access lasts, whether the material was updated for the January 2025 blueprint and the 2026 auto reform, and whether the exam fee is included. IBAO says its own course fee doesn’t include it. RIBO’s disclaimer is worth reading too. It says prep courses are independent of RIBO and taken at your own risk, and that you should check their reliability yourself.

Is there a free RIBO licence course?

None of the Level 1 courses listed here is free. RIBO’s own documents carry no price. PNC Learning offers what it calls a free preview and free trial of its paid course, which is a sample and not the whole thing.
