What a RIBO licence costs

Expect to pay $590 at minimum: $325 for one try at the exam and $265 for the licence. That RIBO licence cost is our sum of two fees set by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), and it leaves out study material and your criminal record check, which others price. The $265 is for the licence year from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027, and you pay a licence fee every year after that.

Amounts are in Canadian dollars, and RIBO’s fee page doesn’t mention tax. The exam fee rose from $300 to $325 on January 1, 2026; you may see the old figure on older pages, including the Level 1 FAQ from the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO).

Who you pay for the exam, and what it covers

You pay $325 to your exam provider, IBAO or the Insurance Institute of Canada, not to RIBO. RIBO’s council sets the fee and it’s the same at both, and the move to in-person exams doesn’t change it.

It covers proctors and the development and administration of the exam. It doesn’t cover the licence, which is a separate fee you pay RIBO when you apply. There’s no discount on rewrites, so two attempts cost $650 and three cost $975, by our arithmetic.

Why the month you apply changes the licence fee

Every RIBO licence runs from October 1 to September 30, whenever you got it. If you apply between July 1 and September 30, you pay half of that year’s fee for the months left, plus the full fee for the coming year.

In 2026 that came to $120 plus $265, or $385 by our arithmetic. An application from October 1 to June 30 pays the one fee. Payment is online by credit card: Mastercard, Visa or American Express.

Refunds on RIBO fees

RIBO keeps the fee once a licence is issued, and that includes renewals and a firm’s bulk payment. You get a full refund only if you paid and no licence came out of it: you withdrew first, or RIBO didn’t issue one.

Exam refunds aren’t RIBO’s to give. They follow your provider’s policy. RIBO also warns that if you register for an equivalency exam you don’t qualify for, you won’t get your money back.

Costs set by someone else

Courses and kits are optional, and each seller sets its own price; the study options page compares them. The criminal record check comes from your local police or Sterling Backcheck, and RIBO’s pages don’t give a price. Some brokerages pay renewals through a bulk payment, though that’s your firm’s choice, not a rule.
