RIBO exam results, pass rates and rewrites

Your unofficial mark arrives within two business days, and the official one comes 14 days after the exam. You get RIBO exam results from your provider, the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) or the Insurance Institute of Canada, not from the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). Only the official result counts for a licence application. If you didn’t pass, you may have to wait before you try again, and from January 1, 2027, the longer wait is three months, not eight.

What do your RIBO exam results show?

You’ll see your overall score and how you did across each content domain, where that applies. RIBO doesn’t show which questions you got wrong, to protect the exam. Results go only to you, so it’s up to you to share them with RIBO when you apply.

An unofficial mark can change. Those 14 days are for quality and security checks, and a flagged exam may be re-scored or nullified.

What is the RIBO exam pass rate?

Exam, 2024-2025WrittenPassedRate
Level 1, with equivalency exams6,1853,20151%
Level 2 Technical / Commercial441943%
Level 3 Management372054%
Level 3 Accelerated Management322991%

These are RIBO’s figures from its 2024‑2025 annual report, which says the Level 1 rate held at 51% for three years. RIBO doesn’t state a fail rate, but on those Level 1 numbers 2,984 of the 6,185 didn’t pass, by our arithmetic. The same report counts 267 results nullified that year, and 41 people had exam privileges suspended. Retirement dates for the exams shown: Level 2, January 1, 2026; Level 3 Management, January 1, 2027.

Is 73 or 74 a pass on the RIBO exam?

No. RIBO’s Level 1 pass is at least 75%, or 75 out of 100. A 73 or 74 can’t be pushed over the line by a re-mark, either: Level 1 and the equivalency exams are all multiple choice, and RIBO says those don’t qualify for a re-mark or an appeal. RIBO’s exams page offers re-marks only on the Level 3 Management Exam.

How many times can you rewrite?

SituationRule
After your first failed attemptWait at least two weeks
Two fails with one provider, before 2027Wait eight months with that provider
Two fails with one provider, from 2027Wait three months with that provider
Switching to the other providerNo long wait; you get two attempts there

“From 2027” means from January 1, 2027, the date RIBO gives for the shorter wait. You pay the full fee for every attempt, and the two-week gap applies with either provider. Don’t write during a waiting period: RIBO says the result is nullified and the wait starts again.

How long does a RIBO exam pass last?

Twelve months from the exam date. You have to use it in that time to apply for a licence or an upgrade. An older answer in RIBO’s FAQ says Level 3 Management results last three years, but RIBO’s exams page and its Accelerated Management page both say 12 months, so plan on that.

If your result is nullified

A nullified exam counts as an attempt and can’t support a licence, and you’ll pay again to retake it. RIBO can do this at any time, including after you’re licensed, and a licence built on that result may be revoked. It says nullifications are final with no appeal, and that providers won’t tell you the reason.

RIBO’s examples of what triggers one range from using unauthorized materials or AI to sharing exam content. A nullified exam can mean writing later exams only on a date, at a time and in a place the provider sets. Serious cases can bring a two-year ban from writing.
