RIBO licence renewal and continuing education

Your licence lasts one year, from October 1 to September 30, and you renew by August 31. RIBO licence renewal happens online in IRIS, the broker portal of the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO), and it has two parts: renewal questions and the fee. Do both, because a renewal isn’t finished until both are in. Miss the final date and you’re suspended, and you can’t act as a broker until you’re reinstated.

  • August 31Yearly renewal deadline
  • September 30Licence year ends; suspension follows
  • 8 or 10 hoursYearly continuing education while practising

How does RIBO licence renewal work?

  1. Log in to IRIS and open the Renewals tile.
  2. Answer the renewal questions. They cover residency, continuing education, other licences, other work, bankruptcy, charges, legal proceedings and any nullified exam.
  3. Check the payment status. Green means your firm paid through bulk payment; red means you pay yourself.
  4. Make sure every item shows green. Only then is your renewal complete.
  5. Download your licence from IRIS after the licence year starts on October 1.

Renewal dates: how 2026 ran

2026 dateWhat happened
July 2 to 27Principal Brokers renew and can bulk-pay for their brokers
July 28 to August 2Renewal closed while RIBO processes bulk payments
August 3 to 31Every broker completes questions and pays if needed
August 31Renewal deadline, 11:59 p.m. ET
September 3030-day notice ends; suspension after 11:59 p.m. ET

That was the 2026‑2027 renewal, and RIBO’s page gives dates year by year. The August 31 deadline is in RIBO’s by-laws. The August 31, 2026 deadline was for people licensed before July 1, 2026. The fee itself lives on the cost page.

If you miss the deadline

A broker who hasn’t renewed by the end of the 30-day notice is put on Administrative Suspension and must stop acting as a broker straight away. To get back, apply for reinstatement and pay the fees; email licensing@ribo.com before you start.

If you’re leaving the industry, you don’t need to renew, but you should email your resignation; not resigning or renewing leads to suspension and penalties. If you resign, you have two years to reinstate without writing the exam again.

How many continuing education hours do you need?

LicenseeHoursMinimums
Principal, Deputy, Supervising Broker105 Management, 1 Ethics
Every other licensee83 Technical, 1 Ethics
Non-practising licensee158 Technical, 3 Ethics

Continuing education (CE) hours are due by September 30, which falls after the renewal deadline, so you may renew with hours outstanding. You attest that you understand you have to finish them. If you’re newly licensed, you’re exempt for the rest of the licence year you registered in, and your hours start the first October after that. The 15 is our sum of RIBO’s 8 Technical, 3 Ethics and 4 others.

Keeping track of CE

RIBO doesn’t keep your record and doesn’t want your certificates sent in. Hold on to them for five years in case of a spot check. Excess hours can carry over one term, as long as the following term’s category minimums are met, and you can only count the same course again after three years.

If you live and are licensed in a province with its own mandatory CE, RIBO accepts that instead. Principal Brokers who fall short are referred to a committee that can revoke their status. Other licensees are suspended until they comply. Someone on long-term disability leave can ask for an exemption through their Principal Broker.

Inactive and non-practising licences

If you’re not working at all, you can hold an inactive licence for up to one year, as long as you renewed and finished your CE. After that, you resign.

A non-practising licence is for people who’ve held a licence for at least three years but aren’t acting as a broker, such as those working elsewhere in property and casualty insurance or on approved leave. RIBO introduced it in October 2025, and it carries the higher CE hours in the table above.
