TCF Quebec and TEFAQ: the Quebec versions

They’re the versions made for Quebec’s own immigration process. Alliance Française d’Ottawa says TCF Quebec counts only for a Quebec file, such as a Certificat de sélection du Québec, and McGill says TEFAQ is recognized only by Quebec’s immigration ministry (MIFI). For Express Entry or citizenship you need TEF Canada or TCF Canada, and Quebec recognizes those two as well.

TCF Quebec format

As listed by Alliance Française d’Ottawa, which offers it, in October 2026. In Montreal, Centre Yves-Thériault sells TCF Quebec by test: CAD 85 for listening, CAD 110 for speaking and CAD 100 each for reading and writing. Listening and reading are shorter than in TCF Canada; writing and speaking are the same length. Quebec’s immigration ministry (MIFI) sets the levels for each program on quebec.ca.

TEFAQ, the TEF for Quebec

McGill, which runs both, says TEF Canada is recognized by IRCC and MIFI, and TEFAQ by MIFI only. At McGill you register for the sections you need one by one. MIFI can ask to verify TEFAQ results, and you can ask for a verification yourself within 90 days of the attestation date: McGill lists the fee as 50 euros, with up to 4 weeks to process.

The TEFAQ writing and speaking sections follow the same pattern as TEF Canada: CCI’s writing advice covers both, and both have a 15-minute speaking test.

TCF Quebec or TCF Canada?

If there’s any chance you’ll apply through a federal program, take TCF Canada or TEF Canada. MIFI recognizes both: the University of Victoria says TCF Canada has been recognized for Quebec immigration since the end of January 2022, and the Université de Sherbrooke says the same. TCF Quebec and TEFAQ aren’t on IRCC’s list of accepted tests.

TCF tout public and TCF DAP

These are general TCF versions, not for Canadian immigration. Alliance Française d’Ottawa lists TCF tout public as three compulsory tests (listening, 29 questions in 25 minutes; language structures, 18 items in 15 minutes; reading, 29 questions in 45 minutes) plus optional writing and speaking. For the DAP, the admission process for French universities, writing is compulsory. Alliance Française de Calgary also offers TCF tout public on some dates, and its version has five compulsory tests, so check your centre.
