Class 3 licence in NZ: medium combination vehicles

It’s the medium combination vehicle licence, for a towing vehicle with one or more trailers. To start a class 3 licence in NZ you need a full class 2 licence, and how long you must hold it depends on your age.

  • Class 2Full licence you need first
  • 12,001 kgStart of class 3’s weight range
  • 25,000 kgHeaviest combination on class 3

What can you drive on a class 3 licence in NZ?

A full class 3 licence covers:

  • A combination vehicle with a gross combined weight (GCW) of 12,001 to 25,000 kg
  • Any vehicle that classes 1 and 2 cover

The licence classes page explains what counts as a combination vehicle and how GCW is worked out.

Before your class 3 learner licence

How long you need a full class 2 licence depends on your age:

Your ageTime on full class 2
Under 256 months
25 or over3 months, or none after the over 25 class 3L course

From there it’s the theory test, then a learner period and the practical test, or an approved class 3 course.

Class 3 or class 4?

Class 3 isn’t a step on the way to class 4. The class 4 learner licence asks for a full class 2, and class 4 doesn’t cover class 3 vehicles. Class 5 covers both.
