Where can you read the road code for heavy vehicles?

NZTA publishes the official New Zealand road code for heavy vehicle drivers on its website, a chapter at a time. You can also buy the road code, which NZTA says is sold at most bookstores and driver licensing agents.

Chapters on speed, your vehicle and work time

Three of its chapters set out rules written for heavy vehicles:

  • Speed limits: the open road limits for heavy vehicles, and when you must slow right down
  • Heavy vehicle requirements: the certificate of fitness (CoF) and the equipment your vehicle must have
  • Work time and logbooks: breaks, work time limits and what a logbook records

The guide’s topics sum up each one.

Practising for the theory test

NZTA’s theory test page says you can test yourself against the questions from the theory test in the road code, and it points to its Drive website as well.

Its heavy vehicle learner licence page links to roadcodepractice.co.nz, an outside website, for practising the theory test.

A study plan for the theory test

You could work through it like this:

  1. Read the road code for heavy vehicle drivers, one chapter at a time.
  2. Learn the numbers for your class: the weights it covers, the speed limits and the work time limits.
  3. Try the 20 questions here and the road code’s own questions.
  4. Book your theory test at a driver licensing agent.
