HGV theory test cost, and the price of every other test

It’s £26 for the multiple-choice part and £11 for hazard perception, so the HGV theory test cost comes to £37 when you add them together. That’s the part 1 test for heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers, and the fees are the same for every lorry and bus category, such as C1, C, D1 and D. All 6 tests of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) add up to £270 on weekdays, by our sum, before any training.

What does the HGV theory test cost, with every other fee?

TestWeekdayEvening, weekend
Part 1a multiple choice£26£26
Part 1b hazard perception£11£11
Part 2 case studies£23£23
Part 3a off-road exercises£40£40
Part 3b on-road driving£115£141
Part 4 practical demonstration£55£63

Those are the prices on GOV.UK’s own services, and you may be charged more on an unofficial website. Bank holidays cost the same as evenings and weekends, and any test from 4:30pm counts as an evening test. Centres don’t offer evening and weekend driving tests all of the time.

An approved provider can charge up to £40 for part 3a. That doesn’t include training or vehicle hire.

How much is an HGV test in total?

Weekday fees for all 6 come to £270. With an evening or weekend part 3b and part 4, it’s £304. Both totals are our own sums from GOV.UK’s table.

If you don’t need the full Driver CPC because driving isn’t the main part of your job, you only take parts 1, 3a and 3b. That’s £192 on weekdays, again by our sum.

These totals only count first attempts. Any test you don’t pass costs the full amount again.

Costs GOV.UK doesn’t set

  • The D4 medical examination report: your doctor, optician or a private firm can charge you, and GOV.UK gives no price
  • Driving lessons and vehicle hire: set by your trainer
  • Periodic training after you qualify: providers set their own prices, with no maximum

What’s free, and other small fees

It’s free to apply for a provisional lorry or bus licence, and free to renew one. A few other fees come up later:

ItemFee
Replacement Driver CPC card£25
Driver CPC card, non-UK licence only£25
Concession card for vocational training£25

GOV.UK says some employers offer help with training costs if you’re returning to driving, and it lists Skills Bootcamps in England as free. Northern Ireland has different fees for its practical tests.
