Where can you get free HGV theory test practice?
Safe Driving for Life is a collaboration between DVSA and its official publisher, The Stationery Office (TSO). Its mock tests are the ones GOV.UK links to, and you can switch on a view that’s like the real screens, plus a voiceover.
GOV.UK is clear that these questions aren’t used in the real test, but they’re based on the same topics. A mock has half the questions of the real thing, and the publisher calls it a small sample of more than 880 revision questions for lorries, or more than 800 for buses and coaches.

What the real questions are based on
GOV.UK names 3 books for the multiple-choice part, and the same 3 for the part 2 case studies:
- The Highway Code
- Know Your Traffic Signs
- The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles, or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches
The first two are on GOV.UK. The third is a printed book, and it’s the only one that’s different for lorries and buses.
Is there an HGV theory test questions and answers PDF?
GOV.UK doesn’t list one. DVSA’s revision questions come in its book and its online kits, and licensed apps carry them too. Be careful with any PDF that claims to hold the real test, because the questions in official practice material aren’t the ones you’ll get on the day.
Online practice is only that: practice. The real test happens at a theory test centre, and its practice question at the start only helps you get used to the screens.
Is there an official HGV theory test app?
GOV.UK’s part 1 page lists one DVSA app, and it’s for hazard perception only. For multiple choice it lists DVSA’s online kit, and Safe Driving for Life’s lorry shop sells online kits and books but no app. The HGV theory test apps on the App Store come from other developers. Some listings say their questions are licensed by DVSA, and those claims are the developers’ own, so read the listing. The table on this page gives their prices.
How to choose between a kit, a book and an app
- Start with the free mocks to see where you stand.
- Reading is your thing? The £19.99 revision book covers multiple choice for lorries and buses in one volume.
- Doing part 1 and part 2 together? The kit with part 2 puts both in one subscription, from £30. The kit without it starts at £25.
- Want it on your phone? The kits work in a phone’s browser, or pick an app from the table.
Hazard perception is a different skill, so it has its own page, starting with 3 free clips.
Training courses, including funded ones
GOV.UK lists Skills Bootcamps as free training courses in England of up to 16 weeks. You have to be 19 or older with a full car licence. They include the costs of your provisional licence and medical, each of the 4 Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) tests, and one re-sit per test.
Apprenticeships pay you a salary while you train, and they’re available in all 4 UK nations. So are private driving schools. Vocational qualifications may be part or fully funded, in England only.
Other theory tests
Not training for a lorry or bus? The car theory test and the driving instructor theory test have their own pages, with their own books and mocks.
