How the HGV hazard perception test works
First you watch a short video on how the test works. Then the 19 clips play, each one an everyday road scene. Every clip has at least one developing hazard, and one of them has two.
A developing hazard is something that would make you change speed or direction. GOV.UK’s example is a parked car. While it’s just sitting there, it’s not a developing hazard. When its right indicator starts to flash and it begins to move away, you’d need to slow down, and it is one.
How the points work
- The sooner you click after a hazard starts to develop, the more points you get.
- A wrong click doesn’t lose you any points.
- Clicking all the time or in a pattern scores nothing on that clip.
- You get one go at each clip, with no way to review or change your response.
Safe Driving for Life lists a higher pass mark for large vehicle drivers than for car drivers: 67 out of 100, against 44 out of 75.
Where can you get HGV hazard perception test practice?

If you’ve already passed the multiple-choice part
Both parts need to be passed within 2 years of each other. Fail hazard perception and you only rebook that part, at least 3 clear working days later. The certificate comes once you’ve passed both.
