How do you book the HGV theory test in Northern Ireland?

To book online you need a valid UK driving licence with a Northern Ireland address, a debit or credit card and an email address. You pay only the cost of the test, with no booking fee. nidirect also says appointments can be booked by telephone.

Give at least three clear working days’ notice and you can move or cancel your test and get a full refund. For a test on a Friday, that means telling DVA by the previous Monday.

What’s different in Northern Ireland

nidirect describes part three as one driving ability test, with 1 hour of road driving, 12 or fewer driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults. The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card, known there as a driver qualification card, can take up to three weeks to arrive.

From 1 October 2026, holders of a Great Britain provisional licence can’t book or take car or motorcycle tests in Northern Ireland. nidirect’s notice names those categories only, and doesn’t mention lorries or buses.
