Alaska drivers ed: schools, the IE permit and online courses

A driver education course isn’t one of the DMV’s requirements for a provisional license. What it asks for is 40 hours of practice signed off by a parent, guardian or employer. Alaska drivers ed comes in through licensed driving schools: they can teach you on a class IE permit, and some are approved to give road tests.

Where can you take Alaska drivers ed?

The DMV’s driving school list groups private schools by region: Anchorage, Eagle River, the Kenai Peninsula, the Mat-Su Borough, Fairbanks, North Pole, Juneau and Bethel. It includes motorcycle and commercial training schools as well as car schools. Each school sets its own prices and schedule, so contact them directly.

The class IE permit and school programs

An IE permit covers non-commercial vehicles, but only while a licensed driving school instructor supervises you. The manual also describes a special instruction permit under AS 28.15.051 for students in an approved high school, community college, commercial driver training course or approved medical program. The IE permit costs $15, like the other instruction permits.

Defensive driving courses for points

The DMV lists seven online defensive driving courses: AARP, AlaskaDriver.com, DrivingUniversity.com, idrivesafely, Go To Traffic School, Safe2Drive and Traffic School Online. The DMV marks AARP’s 4-hour course as valid for an insurance reduction only. A course can reduce your points once every 12 months. If you aren’t contesting the ticket, pay it before you take the course, or the course may not count.
