HESI exam scores: what counts as passing

Elsevier doesn’t pass or fail you on the HESI A2. Your school sets the score it wants, and that number differs from program to program. Your HESI exam scores arrive in your Evolve account in a results report that, Elsevier says, includes detailed scoring and the standards for acceptable scores.

Is there a HESI A2 passing score?

No. Elsevier doesn’t set one. Each school decides the score it wants, so the score you need depends on the program. Take the number from your own program’s admissions page, or ask admissions.

Elsevier’s student guides don’t give a national average either. Schools see their group’s mean percent correct and its weakest subject areas, compared with the national average, in their own results screens.

What your HESI exam scores report shows

Elsevier says the results report in your HESI course includes detailed scoring and the standards for acceptable scores. Elsevier’s student guides don’t explain how A2 scores are calculated, so for questions about your report, ask your instructor.

Your school also decides when you see them; see our results page.

How long are HESI A2 scores good for?

Your school decides how recent a score must be. Elsevier advises schools to set up a new exam group for each admissions season so they get its latest exam content. How long Elsevier keeps your results in Evolve is on our results page.

Is the HESI exam hard?

Elsevier doesn’t rate the A2’s difficulty or publish pass rates. How hard yours feels depends partly on your school’s setup: how many sections it gives, the time it sets, whether you get a calculator and whether it adds Critical Thinking.

A practice test shows you which section will be hard for you. If you test again, your school can give you Version 2.
