Indiana permit practice test

This Indiana permit practice test has 20 free questions written from the Indiana Driver’s Manual. They’re split the way the BMV splits its knowledge exam: 5 show a road sign, and 15 cover traffic rules. You need 4 of the 5 signs and 16 of 20 overall. Pick an answer to see why it’s right, and anything you miss comes back at the end.

Question 1 of 20

You’re 16, you have a learner’s permit and you aren’t in driver education. Who may supervise you while you drive?

20 practice questions in the style of the knowledge exam.

How close is this Indiana permit practice test to the real exam?

The split is the same. The BMV’s exam has a road signs part and a traffic rules part, and you need 80% or more on each one, not just overall. The length isn’t: the BMV doesn’t publish how many questions the real exam has, and these aren’t its questions.

The signs come from Chapter 6 of the manual. The rules come from Chapters 6, 7 and 8, plus Indiana’s own permit and probationary limits from Chapter 1.

Then try the BMV’s own practice exam

The BMV posts a free Practice Knowledge Examination with 6 sign questions, 10 traffic questions and an answer key. It’s a good second check after these 20. The where-to-learn page shows how to use it, and compares apps and driving schools.
