ND DMV locations: driver license sites and hours

North Dakota has no agency called the DMV. Licenses, permits and IDs come from NDDOT's Driver License Division, and vehicle titles and plates from its Motor Vehicle Division. The ND DMV for drivers is a network of 19 driver license sites: eight open most weekdays, and eleven part-time sites that open a day or two a month. Every visit needs an appointment.

How do you book a visit to the ND DMV?

  • Book online with NDDOT's scheduler, or call 1-855-633-6835. Driver license sites don't take walk-ins.
  • For a knowledge test, arrive at least an hour before noon at a site that closes for lunch, and at least an hour before closing anywhere else.
  • Sites close on state holidays, including Good Friday, and at noon on Christmas Eve.
  • All offices are ADA accessible, and interpreting is provided for general business. TTY users can call Relay North Dakota at 711.

Registering a car instead?

Titles, plates and registration are handled by NDDOT's Motor Vehicle Division at its own branches, often in a different building from the driver license site in the same town. In Grand Forks, for example, driver licensing is at the NDDOT office on N Washington St and vehicle work is at Cities Mall.
