Taking the North Dakota permit test online

Yes, you can test from home. KnowTo Drive is NDDOT's online testing site, and it gives the Class D knowledge test to North Dakota residents who are at least 14. The North Dakota permit test online costs $10 a try, gives you 60 minutes, and watches you through your webcam while you work. Passing doesn't give you the permit. You still book an appointment at a driver license office to pick it up.

Who can take the North Dakota permit test online?

  • Any North Dakota resident who's at least 14.
  • Under 18, a parent or guardian registers with you. They must be a North Dakota resident and at least 18.
  • Only the Class D test is offered. The motorcycle and CDL knowledge tests are taken at a driver license site.

What you need at home

  • A desktop or laptop connected to the internet, with a keyboard, mouse and webcam.
  • A quiet room. KnowTo Drive monitors you and your surroundings during the test, and no one else should be nearby.
  • $10 for each try, paid by credit card or PIN-less debit card.
  • Time to finish: the test has a 60-minute limit, and a registration stays valid for 72 hours.

If you fail or are disqualified

After a fail, KnowTo Drive lets you retest after 24 hours. After a disqualification, the wait is 7 days. Once you've failed or been disqualified five times, you wait a year to test online again, or you can take the test in person at a driver license site.

Languages online

KnowTo Drive's FAQ lists the same 14 languages as the office test, from Arabic to Vietnamese. Its North Dakota home page mentions only English and Spanish, with audio playback. If you need a language other than those two, check it when you register.

After you pass

  1. Watch for an email from ND_K2DO@iti4dmv.com with the subject "You have passed your" and the test's name. It has your next steps.
  2. Book an appointment at a North Dakota driver license site. They don't take walk-ins.
  3. Bring your identity, Social Security and North Dakota address documents. Under 18, bring a parent or legal guardian to sign.
  4. Pass the vision screening and pay the $15 permit fee.
