The North Dakota motorcycle permit test

Before the motorcycle test, you need a car permit or license, or a pass on the Rules of the Road test. Then you take the North Dakota motorcycle permit test, a separate knowledge test on the Motorcycle Operator Manual, plus a vision screening. It's given in English and Spanish at driver license sites, not online. The test costs $5 a try and the motorcycle permit $8.

Where do you take the North Dakota motorcycle permit test?

  • Book a driver license site. KnowTo Drive offers only the Class D test online.
  • The test comes in English and Spanish. Sign language and audio testing are at Fargo, Jamestown, Bismarck, Dickinson, Williston, Minot, Devils Lake and Grand Forks.
  • One try per day, $5 each.
  • Study the Motorcycle Operator Manual, free from NDDOT, with an audio version.

At 14 or 15 you hold the motorcycle permit for two months before applying for the license. Under 18, you must wear a helmet, and so must any passenger riding with you.

The safety course and the road test

Under 16, you show proof that you've enrolled in or finished the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic Rider Course before testing. The manual says 14- and 15-year-olds need a completion certificate to get the license.

At any age, a Basic Rider Course completion card dated within the last year waives the road test. Otherwise, call NDDOT's scheduling desk at 855-633-6835 to book the motorcycle skills test, which costs $5. NDDOT links to the North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program for course details.
