How to renew an ND driver's license online or in person

NDDOT's online renewal system tells you whether you can renew without a visit. If it says no, you renew in person at a driver license site, by appointment. To renew an ND driver's license online or in person, the fee is $15. You can renew up to 10 months before it expires and lose no time on it.

Can you renew an ND driver's license online?

NDDOT doesn't list the rules on its renewal page. It sends you to the online system, which checks your record and tells you if you qualify. CDL holders have extra steps: they show proof of legal presence and a North Dakota address, and some can't renew online at all.

Renewing in person

  1. Book through NDDOT's online scheduler. Same-day appointments aren't offered, so plan ahead.
  2. Fill in the online pre-application before you go, if you like. NDDOT says it speeds up the visit.
  3. Bring your current North Dakota license, your appointment confirmation number and the $15 fee ($15 plus $3 per endorsement for a CDL).
  4. Take the vision screening, with your glasses or contacts. Or bring a vision certificate from a doctor or optometrist that's no more than six months old.
  5. Take off your glasses for the photo.

If your license has expired

Your license expires at midnight on your birthday, and you can't drive on it after that. Up to one year after it expires, you renew without retesting. After more than a year, you take the knowledge test and the road test again.

Out of state when it's due? NDDOT lists a $15 fee for renewing by mail from outside North Dakota.

Changing your address or replacing a card

You must tell the Driver License Division within 10 days if your name or address changes. Address, email and emergency contact changes can be made online. A name change needs documents, such as a certified marriage certificate or court order.

A lost, stolen or damaged card can be replaced online if you're eligible, or at a driver license site. A duplicate costs $8, or $3 if you're only changing your name or address. CDL holders must get a duplicate after an address change.
