The North Dakota Motor Vehicle Division

The North Dakota Motor Vehicle Division is the part of NDDOT that handles vehicles: titles, registration, renewals and plates. It doesn't issue driver licenses or give permit tests, which belong to the Driver License Division. NDDOT's manual calls buying a registration buying a vehicle license, and you can renew it online or at one of 18 branches.

Licenses and permits are somewhere else

For a permit test, license, REAL ID or state ID, book a driver license site. In several towns, including Fargo and Grand Forks, it's a different building from the vehicle branch.

Every branch except Bismarck notes branch fees on NDDOT's list. Some branches take walk-ins and some work by appointment, and walk-ins wait behind appointments. Phone numbers for the larger branches are on the phone numbers page.

What does the North Dakota Motor Vehicle Division do?

  • Titles, first-time registrations and registration renewals.
  • Temporary registrations and license plates, including specialty plates.
  • Online registration renewal and self-service kiosks.

Moving here with a car

The manual says a vehicle must be registered in North Dakota as soon as its owner or driver becomes a resident or starts working in the state. You can title it here and buy registration through the end of the period. If your other state's registration is still current and you'll be here only a short time, you can buy a temporary registration permit for 6 or 12 months instead, with a $10 service fee each time on top of the registration fee.

Every vehicle must have liability insurance, and the registration card must stay in the vehicle.
