Your North Dakota driving record and license status

NDDOT's online driving record is a limited one: it shows your current points but leaves out violations more than three years old and crash details. For your complete North Dakota driving record, mail form SFN 51386 with a $3 fee. To see whether a license is valid, or what you owe to reinstate one, NDDOT has separate online checks.

License status and reinstatement

  • NDDOT's Driver License Status Check shows whether a license is valid.
  • Its reinstatement search shows what you still need to do after a suspension. Reinstatement costs $25, $50 or $100, depending on the reason.
  • Pay online by card (the full $50 or $100), by mail with a check or money order, or by phone at 701-328-2604. For a medical or re-examination suspension, pay by phone at 701-328-4353.
  • Reaching 12 or more points carries a $50 suspension fee, and so does failing to show proof of insurance.

Temporary restricted license

A temporary restricted license lets you drive a non-commercial vehicle for work, school or essential needs during a suspension, after you've served part of it with no driving at all. It isn't available to anyone under 18 or for commercial vehicles. Apply on form SFN 2254 and email it to dottrl@nd.gov.

After an alcohol-related suspension, the manual says it can be issued once you've served at least 30 days, or 14 days if you're in the 24/7 Sobriety Program. Repeat offenders may have to join that program.

SR-22 and proof of insurance

The manual says that if you refuse an alcohol test or are convicted of DUI, you must show proof of financial responsibility, called SR-22 insurance coverage.

A conviction for driving without liability insurance means proving insurance to the Driver License Division for one year. You also buy a $50 duplicate license with a "Proof of Liability Insurance" restriction, and pay $50 again to remove it at the end of the year. The fine itself is $150 for a first offense and $300 for another within three years.
