Is the PTCB exam hard?

PTCB reports a 69% pass rate for the CPhT in 2025, the year it gave 49,253 PTCEs. That means about 3 in 10 didn't pass, by our arithmetic, though PTCB doesn't say if the rate counts first attempts only. PTCB's outline shows what makes the PTCB exam hard: it's broad, and there's math in every part.

What makes the PTCB exam hard?

It's broad. Medications alone are 35% of the exam: brand and generic names, classes, interactions, side effects, stability and storage. Federal law, patient safety and order entry make up the rest.

Math is spread all through it. PTCB's outline marks calculation items in all four domains, from doses and days' supply to controlled substance rules. And the clock matters: 90 questions in 1 hour 50 minutes leaves about 73 seconds each, by our arithmetic.

How hard is the pharmacy tech exam from NHA?

NHA's CPhT page and its handbook don't give an ExCPT pass rate, so there's no official number to compare. The ExCPT is longer, at 120 questions in 2 hours 10 minutes, and 43 of its 100 scored questions are on the dispensing process, including calculations and compounding.

What PTCB says about failing

PTCB's guidebook is blunt: its exams are highly reliable, so someone who fails should expect to fail again unless they add to their knowledge before the next try. There's no limit on PTCE attempts, but each one is paid for, and a fourth attempt comes with a wait. The retake rules for both exams are in the guide's FAQ.

NHA's score report shows how you did in each content area, which tells you where to spend your time before an ExCPT retake.

Making it easier on yourself

Practice under time, and learn the math until it's quick. PTCB suggests its Practice Bank first and the Pre-PTCE last, as a final check. Our 20 free questions are a quick way to find your weak topics.
