Texas pharmacy technician exam and registration
To register as a pharmacy technician in Texas, you must already hold a PTCB or NHA ExCPT certification, plus a high school diploma or GED, or be working toward one. Every applicant has a fingerprint session.
If you aren't certified yet, you register as a pharmacy technician trainee. That registration lasts up to 2 years, can't be renewed and is issued only once, so you need to pass the PTCE or ExCPT and upgrade within that time.
Pharmacy technician certification in Tennessee
The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy says it doesn't require national certification of pharmacy technicians, but you must register with the Board. PTCB and ExCPT certifications are separate from that registration, and renewing them is handled by PTCB or NHA, not the Board. You apply online through the state's licensing system.
Other states
For states not listed here, go to your state board of pharmacy's own website, and ask your employer which credential it wants. Pennsylvania's grandfathering route closed to applications on June 28, 2026.
