The give way test: Part A of SA’s learner’s test

It’s the first part of the learner’s test at a Service SA centre: eight diagrams, and for each one you decide which vehicle or pedestrian has to give way. You need all eight right before you can try Part B, the 42 multiple-choice questions. Every answer is in The Driver’s Handbook, which covers giving way on pages 72 to 78.

  • All 8Diagrams you must get right
  • Pages 72 to 78Giving way in The Driver’s Handbook

What is the give way test?

Each diagram shows a road situation, and you pick who is required to give way. All eight must be right, so one wrong answer there stops you going on to Part B.

My Licence’s practice test mixes give-way questions in with multiple-choice ones, so you can try the format before the real give way test.

Stop signs, Give Way signs and T-intersections

At a Stop or Give Way sign or line, you give way to vehicles coming from any other direction, except:

  • If you’re going straight ahead, an oncoming vehicle turning right that has a Stop or Give Way sign of its own
  • A vehicle turning left using a slip lane
  • A vehicle making a U-turn

If you turn left or right there, you also give way to pedestrians crossing the road you’re entering.

At a T-intersection, the driver on the road that ends gives way to all vehicles on the continuing road and to pedestrians crossing it. Signs or lines can make either road the one that ends, which the handbook calls a modified T-intersection.

Turning right, and the give way to the right rule

Before you turn right, give way to vehicles coming the other way, including ones turning left, unless they’re turning left from a slip lane.

At an intersection with no lights, signs or road markings that isn’t a T-intersection, give way to any vehicle on your right, bicycles included. It doesn’t matter whether you’re going straight and the other vehicle is turning.

Roundabouts, driveways and other cases

The handbook’s giving way pages also cover these:

  • Roundabouts: give way to vehicles already on the roundabout
  • Slip lanes: turning left, give way to pedestrians and bicycle riders on the slip lane and to vehicles from your right
  • Leaving a parking space or the kerb: give way to traffic on the road and signal for at least five seconds
  • Driveways and car parks: give way to vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians on the road, footpath or road-related area
  • Merging lines of traffic with no lane lines: give way to a vehicle if any part of it is ahead of you, the zip merge
  • Police and emergency vehicles with a siren or red or blue flashing lights: give way and leave them a clear path
