SA driver’s licence renewal: fees and how to renew

You can renew online, unless you need a new photo, or at a Service SA centre or selected Australia Post office. You pick how many years to renew for, from 1 to 10. SA driver’s licence renewal fees carry no GST, and there’s no extra charge for the photo.

Ways to renew

The handbook lists three ways:

  • Online, except when you need a new photo (the handbook says a photo usually lasts 10 years)
  • At a Service SA customer service centre
  • At selected Australia Post offices, if your licence expired no more than 6 months ago and you bring your renewal notice and evidence of identity

If you can’t get to a centre or post office, send your application and the fee to a Service SA centre. You’ll get back a temporary licence valid for a calendar month and a list of photo points, and you should have your photo taken before it runs out.

From P2 to a full licence

Service SA posts a renewal notice 4 to 6 weeks before your P2 licence expires. You can move to your full licence online in your mySAGOV account, with your licence number, or at a Service SA centre with your provisional licence and the fee. In person you get a temporary licence valid for one month.

Renewing at 75 and over

From 75, if you hold only a car licence and have no medical condition, the handbook says a self assessment comes in the mail each year around your birthday. If you answer yes to any question, or aren’t sure, you see a doctor to complete it. From 85, holders of any class other than C, such as a truck or motor bike licence, take a practical driving test every year.

If your licence has lapsed

If you haven’t held a licence anywhere in the past five years, you start again. That means a learner’s permit, with myLs or the theory test, then a Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) or Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A), and the hazard perception test.
