Where can you learn the South Australian road rules?
The handbook has four parts: road safety, the road rules, drivers and licensing, and vehicles and registration. The road rules part, pages 42 to 107, covers:
- Speed limits and driving on the road
- Signs, driving signals and traffic lights
- Crossings and giving way
- Roundabouts, freeways and expressways
- Towing, night driving and motor bikes
- Bicycle riders, parking and mobile phones
The handbook says it’s a plain-English overview, not a precise reading of the law, and that its diagrams aren’t to scale. It’s published under a Creative Commons licence.
Studying with myLs
myLs is an online course with the learner’s test as its final stage. My Licence says the handbook’s content is covered in it and the test questions come from that content, so you don’t need to study the handbook as well.
A study plan for the test at Service SA
Each attempt at a centre costs a fee, so it pays to be ready before you book. You could work through it like this:
- Read the road safety section first. My Licence picks it out as the part to read.
- Learn the giving way pages until you can explain each example, because Part A needs every diagram right.
- Go through speed limits, signs, traffic lights, crossings and parking.
- Take the official practice test, 14 random questions a go, until you pass it a few times in a row, then book.
Once you have your L’s
You’ll use The Driving Companion, which holds your log book and the competency tasks for your P’s.
Anyone who charges you for driving lessons must hold a driving instructor’s licence. The handbook also suggests checking that the instructor has professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
