The hazard perception test in SA

You must pass it to move from your learner’s permit to a P1 licence. The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) is a computer test of how well you spot and respond to dangers on the road, and the hazard test in SA can be done online through mySAGOV or in person at Service SA. It costs $37.

  • $37Fee for the hazard perception test
  • OnlineOr in person, booked by phone
  • 4 crash typesWhat the test is built around

Online or in person

Online, log in to mySAGOV in a web browser, not the app, choose Enrol in hazard perception test, pay the fee and launch the test. You have 12 months from enrolling, and you can take it as many times as you need at no extra cost.

In person, you pay each time you take it, and you need a booking. Phone Service SA on 13 10 84.

You can do the HPT before you pass your practical driving test.

What happens in the test

My Licence describes it like this:

  1. An introduction explains the test and gives you instructions.
  2. You get practice questions before the real test starts.
  3. You watch video clips of real traffic, seeing what the driver sees, with the speed and indicators shown on the dashboard.
  4. You’re told what the driver wants to do, such as move off, turn right, slow down or overtake, and you decide if or when it’s safe.
  5. A screen tells you when you’ve finished and what your next steps are.

Why does SA have a hazard perception test?

The handbook says it’s based on the four most common crash types for South Australian provisional drivers:

  • Hitting the rear of another vehicle
  • Colliding at right angles
  • Collisions where at least one vehicle is turning right
  • Running off the road and hitting an object, such as a tree, a pole or a parked vehicle

My Licence lists the chapters of its hazard perception test book: crash patterns of provisional drivers, how the test works, developing hazard perception skills, keeping a safe distance, selecting safe gaps, scanning for hazards and expecting the unexpected.

Practice, then your P1 licence

The Australia-wide hazard perception course on this site has general written scenarios to practise on. They aren’t South Australia’s test clips.

Once you’ve passed the HPT, passed your driving test or finished your competency based training, and logged your hours, you can apply for your P1 licence.
