How to change or cancel your Life in the UK Test date

You can move it for free if you do it more than 72 hours before the test, the booking service says. Inside 72 hours you can’t change your Life in the UK Test date: you’d have to cancel, without a refund, and pay for a new test. The same 72-hour line decides whether you get your £50 back when you cancel.

How do you change the Life in the UK Test date?

The booking service’s terms let you change the date and time of your appointment up to 72 hours before it, free of charge. Neither its FAQ nor GOV.UK lists the steps, so if you can’t see how to do it in your account, ask the helpline.

Changing your name or other details

Your first name and date of birth can’t be changed on a booking. If either is wrong, the booking service says to cancel and make a new account. Other personal details can be changed up to 24 hours before the test, and nothing can be changed after that.

How to cancel

  1. Sign in to your Life in the UK account.
  2. Select Confirmed tests.
  3. Select Cancel tests.

Cancel at least 72 hours (3 days) before and GOV.UK says the £50 goes back to the card you booked with. You don’t need to contact UKVI, and you can book another date.

When you don’t get your money back

GOV.UK and the booking service list these:

  • You cancel or rearrange within 3 days of the test.
  • You arrive late, or don’t turn up.
  • You bring the wrong ID or documents, or refuse to have your photo taken.
  • You were ill on the day.
  • You break the test rules.

If the test centre cancels your test, you can ask for a refund. Ask within 3 months of the test date.

Rule changes to know in 2026

Two dates matter if you’re booking now. An expired biometric residence permit or card can only be used for a test on or before 31 December 2026. And since 1 October 2026, headphones are only available through special arrangements.
