What are the four parts of the ACCUPLACER ESL test?
| Test | What it measures | Question style |
|---|---|---|
| Reading Skills | Understanding short passages and making inferences | Passages of up to 50 words and 51 to 90 words |
| Sentence Meaning | Word meaning in one- or two-sentence contexts, including phrasal verbs and idioms | Stand-alone questions |
| Language Use | Grammar, usage and punctuation | Fill in a blank, or pick the best way to combine two sentences |
| Listening | Understanding conversations and lectures in English | Audio with pictures of the speakers |
How the Listening test works
You look at pictures of the speakers while you listen to a conversation or a lecture, set somewhere like a lecture hall, a library or a grocery store. Then the question and the four answer choices are read aloud. You can replay the conversation, the question or any choice, but each only two more times.
What ESL scores mean
College Board describes what students can do at points on the 20 to 120 scale. On ESL Reading Skills, for example:
| Score | Typical skills |
|---|---|
| About 57 | Find stated information when the answer is close to the question’s wording |
| About 82 | Draw conclusions and find the main idea despite tempting wrong answers |
| About 102 | Work with a passage as a whole, recognize what’s implied, tone and purpose |
Your college sets the scores for each of its courses.
