The ACCUPLACER math placement test: three tests to choose from

ACCUPLACER has three math tests, and your college decides which you take: Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS), or Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF). Each ACCUPLACER math placement test has 20 multiple-choice questions and a score from 200 to 300. Some questions give you an on-screen calculator, but you can’t bring your own.

Which ACCUPLACER math placement test will you take?

Ask your college which one it gives you before you study.

TestCollege Board describes it as forCovers
ArithmeticFundamental arithmetic skillsWhole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, comparing numbers
QASStudents heading into non-STEM fields, or undecidedRatios, exponents, linear equations, probability, statistics, geometry
Advanced Algebra and FunctionsSTEM fields, and fields that need advanced math such as medicine, economics or accountingQuadratics, functions, polynomials, logarithms, trigonometry

Can you use a calculator on the ACCUPLACER math test?

Only the one built into the test, and only on some questions:

  • A question that allows a calculator shows an icon in the top-right corner. Click it to open the calculator.
  • Depending on the question, you get a basic four-function calculator, one with a square root key, or a TI-84 graphing calculator. Some questions let you pick.
  • Questions without the icon are meant to be done by hand. College Board gives a calculator only where it won’t give the answer away.
  • You can’t bring a handheld calculator into the test center or use one on any ACCUPLACER math test, unless it’s an approved accommodation.

The paper COMPANION math tests are written to be done without a calculator. Students without an approved accommodation who say they need one can use a four-function calculator on Arithmetic and one with a square root key on QAS and AAF.

College Board has a sample question PDF for each of the three math tests, and the Study App’s practice tests include the same on-screen calculators. You can try them there before test day. Our practice test includes Arithmetic and QAS questions.

Those names belong to the older Classic ACCUPLACER tests. College Board’s current math tests are the three above.
